Writing partner(s) wanted

Yet again I'm seeking a co-writer or writers for a PSL or two.

I prefer to use IJ or email on those occasions when IJ is down. I do not use instant-messager programs of any kind.

General About me )

Characters and 'ships I enjoy writing:

Snarry )

Snupin )

Het: Snape/OFC or canon character, including Hermione )

Looking for something Darker? How about Lucius or Walden Macnair in some heavier BDSM stuff? )

And a few last general notes:

If we write together, I promise to be a committed writing partner. You will never receive a 'one liner' from me, and I try very hard to 'notice' the subtle cues you give to me - body language of your character, subtext, anything that makes the story richer and the development between the characters grow. If I'm going to be terribly busy or away for a few days, I will tell you. If the line just isn't working for me, I will tell you.

I appreciate the same courtesy in return.

Please advise!

Cross-posted everywhere that allows such off-topic questions.

I love, love, love reading fanfiction all the time.

I do not always 'need' the convenience of a keyboard.

I am 40-something years old and relatively 'technophobic'. I do not have a 'smart phone' or an 'Iphone' and rather dread the day when I will have to get one because no 'normal' phones are available.

Money is always an issue - I have four kids for heaven's sake! ;)

With all this in mind, would my 'fandom friends' please advise me?

Kindle or Nook? Which one is the most 'user friendly' and most likely to allow me to transfer and/or read fanfiction stories on it? I am not very likely (I think) to buy many ebooks from Amazon or other places. I've had an "Ebookwise" for years, which I enjoy very much, but it has no internet access in and of itself - it has to be connected to a computer to load books.

The advantage it has always held for me was 12+ hours of battery life and 'backlighting' so I can read it in the dark.

What do you have and does it serve your fandom fix well?

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!
~Shanti

Sometimes, a gal's just gotta whinge

Why are there so few hours in a day?

Why is it always the not-so-good writers that are the most prolific?

Why does my creative writing muse demand hours of peace and quiet to flourish and create, when I can only give it scraps of time at the end of the day?

Unrelated to my own childish whinging, I'm curious as to the widely variant and often completely opposite "squicks" that people have. What squicks you in reading fanfiction (or any fiction)? Why does it give you those heebee-jeebies?

And other pointless ramblings. )

Thanks for listening to my whinge. Feel free to participate in the HP fandom "what squicks you" discussion as you wish.

I have lost my voice.

Not my literal voice, but definitely my creative/writing voice.

I think it's because I'm too dang busy with kid-stuff. Soccer, dance, track, band, school play, Sunday school, bazzillion fundraisers, etc., etc., etc.

I MISS my own head-space. I miss writing fanfic. I miss trying to write on my original stuff.

But whenever I have a few minutes peace and quiet - I see the 'stuff' around the house that needs to be done in our rare moments of down time. Laundry. Cleaning. Camper that must be winterized asap.

And none of my favourite characters are speaking inside my head anymore. Or at least, not in voices insistent enough to transfer themselves to the page. I have outlines. Explicit, detailed notes going from point A to point B on the stuff I've been working on.

Even that scaffolding isn't supporting me right now.

I wouldn't give up a DROP of this 'kid time' for anything in the world. They're growing up so fast - I have only four "for sure" years left with my oldest boy. I gave up a lot of my fandom and online "junk" so I could have more time with the kids and less time away from addictive online time-wasters.

But sometimes, I really miss just living in another character's being for a little while.

Ah, well. This too shall pass.

Today

Today, I:

Really didn't have much to do. )

Life is good. I don't mean to sound whingy. Honestly, I had FUN the vast majority of the day. Coaching soccer is ridiculously rewarding - shouting-sore-throat and all - and it's just a blessing to have these wonderful times with the kids.

But boy, oh boy, am I tired! (grin)

When intelligent people go completely round the twist.

Picture this.

A lovely young woman, barely 20, scarily intelligent on a Hermione-ish scale, having lived through some of life's hard-knocks and come through with a bit of a tough-shell but otherwise seemingly whole . . .

Who suddenly becomes involved in a textbook-classic abusive relationship. It's absolutely frightening how cut-and-dried this whole thing reads.

He cheats on her. He verbally abuses her. He is a "violent, ugly drunk". All by her own admission.

I'm a blunt person. She knows this about me. Everyone who knows me knows this about me. To see this bright, beautiful, vivacious young woman absolutely grovelling over this man, afraid that he's going to break it off with her because, heaven forbid, she stood up for herself for once, I darn near blew my stack.

And her response to my response was equally classic right out of the Abused Woman's Handbook.

He needs me.

He loves me.

He's so sweet when he's not beating me, yelling at me, telling me I'm fat and ugly, sleeping with his old girlfriend, etc.

I'm the only one that can get through his shell. He's better to me than he's ever been with anyone else. I'd die without him.

Gods. Makes. Me. Sick.

I'm so worried about her. I only pray to God that she'll wake up and see the light before he truly, permanently hurts her.

Dear School District - I am PISSED

And here's why.

'Let's give school children their own laptops! Without asking their parents if they want them! And let's make sure the parents have to pay $250 to repair/replace them if anything happens to them! And let's make them Macbooks! And let's give them to kids entering 7th grade all the way through 12th grade, because, you know, we don't know how else to spend this money . . .' ~A lengthy email sent to my kids' school superintendent, principal, IT department, and the entire school board - all 5 of them. )

Edited names out.

Damn, am I pissed.

I AM A RUNNER!!!

Firstly, yes, 'she lives'.

About a year and a half ago I significantly dropped my online time to spend more time with my family. Kids are growing up and so active and everything . . ..

It's been great. However, I've missed my 'online' friends and creative outlet, the "me" space inside my own head and all that jazz.

After saving up my pennies and generous birthday gifts from my family, I splurged on a fancy (refurbished) laptop and now will be able to take my hobby with me when I'm sitting through endless practices and games and stuff. LOL

But, what I'm really excited about is the health benefits I've reaped and I have to crow!

Two Miles!! )

Anyway, if you're still reading - thanks for letting me take a minute to shout my little personal triumph. :)

Teenagers - how often they surprise you!

My oldest son is going to be 15 in July. He's at that age where mom gets dumber by the second, exists only to be humiliating, and is only endurable when in need of money or transportation.

I'm exaggerating slightly - he's a good kid and relatively responsible and all that stuff, but still. He's a young-teen-boy.

Tonight, after enduring (barely) his little sister's "dance camp" performance without (much) complaint, he was rewarded with being allowed to sleep in the basement (with the game systems) and have the space/games to himself for the night.

Half an hour ago he came upstairs and said, "Mom, if someone tells me they want to commit suicide, is that one of the things you want me to tell you right away?"

Yikes!

So, of course I said yes, and so he showed me text-messages from a female friend of his, in despair because her boyfriend broke up with her, etc. Usual 14-year-old angst stuff, except that she says she feels hopeless and wants to die and knows where her mom keeps sleeping pills.

Gah!

I called their house, no answer from the landline phone. She won't answer her cell, though she kept up the text-message thing. So we (son and I) hopped into the car and drove to her house.

She was terribly embarrassed when I got there (son stayed hiding in the car, upset that she might be mad that he 'told' on her), but she was home alone with her sister (a common circumstance) and I just needed her to know that she was being 'watched', if that makes any sense.

Of course, it was all probably just a plea for attention - but if it had been that one in a hundred chance that it was the 'real thing', I could never have lived with myself for ignoring it.

I am sooooooooo proud of my kid for telling me! I can't imagine how hard that must have been for him to do! I told her (the young lady in question) that I routinely 'snoop' my son's cell phone and 'made' him tell me who the text messages were from in order to hopefully help him 'save face' a little bit.

Sometimes they really surprise you.

Happy 2009

Hello dear Flist! She lives!

For those of you who actually know me and want to know what I've been up to . . . )

Here is wishing you all a very healthy, happy, and enriching 2009!

*pouts*

Does anyone know if [info]snarry_games this round is only art work? I was so excited to see there was another bout of posting going on, but I am one of the last ten people on the planet with *slow* dial-up. I almost never look at artwork because of the ridiculously long loading times. Stories are much faster.

*pouts some more*

I had a few minutes to indulge myself in some fandom and I was going to see if there were new Snarries around.

*toddles off to re-read "Whispers of Intent" by Tira Nog for the umpteenth time*

Or maybe I'll immerse myself in my favorite all-time Snupin, "The Way of the World" by the incomparable McKay . . ..

Decisions, deciscions.

Long time, no see!

Life is crazy to the max, but sometimes I *have* to come lurk my favourite HP fandoms.

While reading some lovely [info]dementordelta Snarry and lurking her f-list, I came across this fun thing:

When you see this, post in your own journal with your favorite quote from The Princess Bride. Preferably not "As you wish" or the Inigo Montoya speech.

As this has got to be one of the best one-liner-source movies of all time, I had to play.

Here's mine:

"Walk? You're alive! If you like, I could fly!"

This, in my mind, is a lovely line for Severus' love-of-the-moment to utter when he is written properly in all the post-DH repairs that are out there. :) Snupin is my OTP, always, but Snarry is my guilty pleasure. This line, in my head, would fit just fine in either case.

And now I go back to my usual routine of coaching 2 soccer teams with the 2 other kids on their own as well, football, ballet, taekwondo, gymnastics, and my 8-year-old daughter "made it" into our local community Nutcracker! We're a town of 50,000 people near a "city" (in Iowa, such things are relative) of more than half a million people. *HUNDREDS* of little girls tried out for the various parts, and our dance center does almost an entirely new cast for each of the three shows (except the two professionals that come here from NYC to do the male and female leads).

It's a very big deal that she 'got in' on her first attempt, and even a bigger deal that, while it is a very small part, she will be in all three shows. They're doing a new section this year that he hasn't done before - 'Harlequins' - and so he didn't want to try and teach three different casts a dance he wasn't completely familiar with, himself, so the eight little girls cast as the Harlequins will all be in each performance.

Exciting. Busy. Stressful - as this daughter is the child who gets attacked by Strep Throat every time it comes around. She has now officially passed the threshold where she *needs* to have her tonsils out - but she has to be out of dance for 2 weeks after, according to the doc who I know/trust to do the surgery, which means she can't do it until after the Nutcracker, or they'll pull her from the performance. (Can't miss more than 1 practice and stay in.)

She's been healthy for precisely 10 days, and is now cooking a fever of 102.5 again.

*sigh*

So glad I didn't try to squeeze in SnuSa this year, no matter how desperately I wanted to do it!

See you later!

A/N: My submission for the Create your own ending to Book 7 Challenge for [info]lupin_snape. Written entirely before the release of DH (by about 24 hours) and therefore spoiler-free. This is so not my usual fare that I’ve left my comfort-zone on another continent, but it was very fun to write.
Disclaimer: Severus Snape, Remus Lupin and all other mentioned canon-characters from the Harry Potter realm belong to JKR. I’m not making any money, I’m just taking the boys out to play. I used to promise to put them back where I found them when I’m done, but I’m not so sure I’m going to do that anymore. I think they’re happier with me. (And other, more talented writers, of course!) *wink*
Word count: 23, 959
Betas: The wonderful [info]julythirtyfirst who was especially brilliant at scouring my punctuation goofs, among other things, and [info]research_girl who helped me refine the grammar and smooth down some of the obvious Americanisms. These ladies took a chance on me on very short notice and were beyond helpful and constructive. All other errors remain my own.
Special Thank You to [info]kirasha for being my ever-encouraging muse, who bunnied me for this challenge, who played Remus to my Severus at [info]fiery_inception for two years, who insisted I was too a 'good enough' writer to dare to post to [info]lupin_snape, and who always has uplifting things to say no matter how discouraged I feel. Your friendship is the dearest thing I have gained here in the delightful world of Harry Potter Fandom.
Summary: Remus finds himself rescued from the tender mercies of Bellatrix Lestrange, only to be presented, as a gift, to Albus’ murderer. Maybe he’d have been better off in Bella’s hands. Then again, maybe not.

Contingency Plan

Part one of four. )

A brief need to whinge.

I need to just get this out so I can stop dwelling on it. Life is good, I've been blessed again and again in innumerable ways and really have no reason to whine.

Which does not at all change the fact that I am human and sometimes life's little frustrations are enough to make a good whine absolutely necessary to mental health, so here it goes.

In the last two weeks, my house has quite literally begun to fall apart around my ears. )

There we are. End of whinge.

Stupid Harry Potter fandom questions

Question #1 - what does EWE mean in regards to fanfiction? The only thing I can think of is something to do with the dreaded epilogue, but I can't quite figure it out. Epilogue, what epilogue?

Question #2 - can someone point me to the link that explains the two 'teams' for the Snarry Games this time? I've got slow dial-up and don't always get on here, so I missed the explanations for the two teams. Romance/Angst was easy to figure out, as was Post-War/Wartime, but this time the teams are Team Phoenix and Team Dragon and I just can't grok what the underlying intent/difference between the two.

Team Phoenix I sort of get is probably something to do with Snape being alive but relatively canon? Am I close?

Team Dragon, though . . . where are they going with this one? Help?

Sorry to be a dork and thanks in advance for the enlightenment. I will be greatly relieved to be rid of the burden of idiocy.

Cheers!

I had Lasik Surgery yesterday!

I just had my day-after follow up appointment.

So, if you want to know the play-by-play details... )

I've never had any medical procedure that was easier, more comfortable, or so dramatically changed my life.

While everyone will obviously have different experiences with anything, I can not imagine ever NOT being thrilled that I've had this done.

And the tears of happiness only help keep my eyes moist and speed the healing. *grin*

How out of the loop am I??

I am soooooo out of the loop.

Frankly, I'm glad of it, most of the time.

JKR, dearest, what are you doing?? )
